    I don’t see how the signing is defensible in any manner. Omar is sort of a final piece, not a first piece. It is a waste of $5.1 mil, that could have been spent any number of other ways. As far as good D and mediocre – but with some potential upside – offense, the Giants would have been better off to spend the minimum and use either/or Ochoa/Figueroa. The three of them, as far as prospects for ’08, each bring greatly above average D and pretty unknown O. Assuming Omar has a better shot to hit, say, 260, than either of the other 2, the difference simply isn’t worth $5 mil. Ochoa, at least, has some slight shot at developing into a major leaguer.
