Thanks for the second link Martin!

About defense, I’ve not seen one expert say he’s good on defense, the best I’ve seen is that he has the speed to make up for mistakes on routes, which sounds a lot like Lewis.

BA liked his glove and BP gave him a nod saying that his glove will "play in center".

It also sounds like his arm is better than Lewis's, Fred doesn't have the strongest arm in the world. I hope the Giants let Davis log some time in CF so I can see first hand how his defense looks. On a couple of other Pirates blogs some fans were moaning about his defense but you never really know.

For a minor leaguer, you have to look at his success (or lack thereof) in AA and AAA, than to mix in his lower level successes. There's too much noise in the data to really get a handle on things, other than successful or not. Hence you cannot just look at his career minor league numbers.

Davis had an excellent BB/K ratio coming up the system but hit the wall in AA, dropping to OK levels, just above 0.5. However, he kept his contact rate good - around 85% - so basically he was not able to get as many walks as he used to, reducing his OBP to around .340-.350 in AA/AAA. If he can duplicate that in the majors great, but normally there is still further decline from his AA/AAA stats to the majors. Roberts has a proven good OBP for the majors, around .350-.360 so I would dispute that Davis is as good there.

In addition, his steal% is not good, around 75-80%, showing that he steals based on speed, not technique, much like Ellison did. Roberts, however, has a very high success rate, and that's because he learned the great techniques of Maury Wills. Hopefully he can still around and teach these to Davis, Lewis, and all the other speedsters in our system during spring training next season. Again, Davis is not as good.

His best points are his ability to make contact, his speed, and his right handed hitting, he would be great in a platoon with Roberts in CF. Then we have Winn in RF, then Bochy can switch between Lewis and Schierholt in the OF, with Winn moving to LF when Schierholtz plays and RF when Lewis plays. But that's only if Davis can translate his success in the minors to the majors and that's not a given yet, though apparently he's been hitting nicely lately in the past two weeks.

I'll throw in a quick comment here too about who should replace Morris.

I hope the Giants look at guys to replace Morris that play into the future (read: no Russ Ortiz) I'd like to see guys like Misch or Blackley, get a shot in the rotation to see what they've got. Ortiz might get the first couple of starts but he should not be given the bulk of them as he probably won't play into 2008 or beyond for the Giants.

The Giants should leave Jonathan Sanchez in the pen this year and I think they will. They came out at the beginning of the year and stated that they'd give him a role to stick to. Misch is currently stretching out his arm in AAA to fill a spot in the rotation. Blackley hasn't exactly wowed this year in AAA, but he's had his moments and is already on the 40-man roster, so I'd like to see him get a shot too.
