I am telling you right know, get ready for Pedro Gomez. A six part interview headlined by Pedro talking to other Giants and Bonds? Sure! ESPN would green light that in a nanosecond. Get ready for him like you’ve never gotten ready for anything before. In my best salty grizzled cowboy voice “Theres a media blitz a-comin’!”
Barry Bonds has failed a drug test but wait, its not what you might be thinking. Bonds has failed a drug test, yes, but its for amphetamines. Bonds flunking a drug test is practically like printing free 100 dollar bills for the various sports outlets that are going to sweep down upon this dead horse and beat it with the fury of a thousand angry Dodger fans. Brace yourself.
Let me go ahead and state that flunking a drug test is bad and I am not trying to apologize for Barry but amphetamines? Is it bad that I don’t think its such a big deal? Speed isn’t a performance enhancing drug but it might help you get over your hangover faster.
Greenies, speed, amphetamines, whatever you want to call them have been around baseball for a long, long time now. I know they are illegal under new drug rules but if I had to take a blind guess I would bet that a huge percentage of major leaguers are still getting hopped up on greenies. Hall of Famer, Mike Schmidt has even admitted that he used them on occasion when he played ball. Heck, even Willie Mays drank the “red juice” according to John Milner.
The worst thing to come out of this so far is how Barry himself handled it. Apparently, blaming Mark Sweeney saying that he got them from him. Mark Sweeney!? Are you kidding me? Hes one of the most respected guys on the Giants. Blaming Sweeney really makes Barry look dickish. There is still dispute over whether or not Bonds actually blamed Sweeney. The other interesting aspect is that since Bonds tested positive for speed he has been tested numerous times for everything, including the big S-word.
I hope that this gets settled between Bonds and Sweeney because Sweeney never struck me as anything other than a good teammate. Many talked about how loose and more fun the clubhouse became after he joined the team. Until then you might want to mute your TV set for a few days.
Maybe Barry should have drank a couple of these instead? I’ve had two flavors of the one and only Steven Segal energy drink and they are truly horrid. Ride the bolt!
Update - Barry doing the right thing and apologizing to Mark Sweeney.
“He is both my teammate and my friend,” Bonds said in a statement. “He did not give me anything whatsoever and has nothing to do with this matter, contrary to recent reports.
