A New Path?

There has already been a lot of fallout at the simple mentioning of Los Gigantes signing veterans Roberts and Aurilia.

In rebuttal to the popular opinion I claim that these signees mark the shift in organizational philosophy that Giants GM Brian Sabean pledged at the end of the summer.

Now you may ask, “How can the signing of 2 aging veteran players change the face of an already old franchise?”

Go Dave Go!The answer lies in the big picture, the Giants beyond the 2007 season. By signing cheap replacement level players to relatively short term contracts (2 years; Aurilia, 3 years; Roberts) it affords the time and money for the Giants to put more focus into the draft and produce strong postion players who will be ready to take the major league field in a few years time. Not to mention that Roberts is the most underated player on the FA market with a better batting average, OBP. and steal percentage than Juan Pierre. Sure he’s older, injury proned and in need of a platoon partner but his potential contract makes a lot more sense than Pierre’s 5 year $45 million dollar contract. Just because Colletti has flashed more dollars in the market this year doesn’t make him a good GM, anyone who claims so has no idea what they are talking about. Plus, between Roberts and Bonds (if he resigns) Linden will probably see a similar amount of at bats that Finley saw last year.

We all know the Rotation is set and its only going to get stronger, with a little bit of luck in three or four years time the next (and first in a great while) wave of young position players will be ready.

Mark my words, in 4 years the Giants will have a new, young, cheap core of great position players resembling the likes of Wright and Reyes in New York or Sizemore and Victor Martinez in Cleveland right about the same time Chicago and Houston begin to regret the Soriano and Lee contracts.

Plus if Richie comes back to the Giants I can bust out my old bobblehead from the closet…everybody wins.

Roberts should not be in CF. THe Dodgers cut him loose because he was a sub-par CF, primarily because his arm is not good enough to play that position. Runners routinely take extra bases on him, no matter what position he is in. San Diego came to find that out also, which prompted them to go out and get Cameron to play CF. Anyone who has watched the NL West regularly recognizes that Roberts should not be playing CF. Why is it that Sabean ignores this? Seems to me that there is some disconnect between the front office and the coaching staff that knows the players.

Well, Roberts fielding stats are pretty good. He played CF in 05, but, when the Padres picked up Cameron for '06, he played CF and Roberts played a corner spot

Hey Keenlow, I removed the image from your post because it wasn't hosted on our servers. Its slightly bad "netiquette" to use images from other servers because we are using their bandwidth instead of ours. I'll upload it to baytcityball's servers later and re-add it to your post. Also, if you get the time email me a quick blurb on yourself that I can stick on the contributers page. I don't mind Roberts either, at a 3 year deal hes not too much of a risk and he isn't earning big enough bucks thats its going to cripple the Giants financially. I haven't looked at his defensive stats but I've heard from other Padre fans that hes not good in center? I also hope he can stay healthy since hes 34 and is known to have nagging injuries. Sabean is right to try and save as many draft picks as he can this year. The draft is going to be a good one and many are comparing it to the 2001 draft which produced a lot of stars. Stars such as Teixeira, Mauer, and Mark Prior (if could stay healthy). The Giants also drafted Hennessey in the 1st round with the 21st pick in 2001. 5 picks later Bonderman got drafted. Doh!

I agree; I would much rather have Roberts than Matthews or Pierre - even at the same money. I think he brings a lot more game, especially in the clutch. I also think the team IS getting younger. Sabean said 'younger,' not younger than 30. Roberts/Linden is definitely younger and healthier than Alou/Finley
